The top 16 hockey playing nations in the world will vie for the world championship of the IIHF as they will be broken down into two groups of eight teams each.

Group A will be comprised of Finland, Canada, the United States, Switzerland, Slovakia, Belarus, France, Kazakhstan while Group B will feature Russia, Sweden, Czech Republic, Germany, Norway, Latvia, Denmark, and Italy. Kazakhstan and Italy were both promoted from lower ranks for this competition.

Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm Sweden will host this year’s event and Russia will enter as the top ranked team in the IIHF followed by Finland, Sweden, Canada, Czech Republic, United States, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Slovakia, Belarus, Latvia, Denmark, France, Kazakhstan, and Italy.

Russia is a natural number one selection as they have a tradition of dominance that goes back to the old days of the Soviet Union when they were a nearly unbeatable team. Incredibly enough the Russians finished in 4th place in last year’s IIHF tournament. The Russians were the winner in both 2008 and 2009 and finished second in 2010. Since the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1992, Team Russia has won three championships.

Finland also has a strong hockey tradition and is the defending champion of the IIHF world championship tournament. The Fins now have two titles since 1995. The great Jari Kurri, who made his fame as a goal scoring machine with Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers in the 1980’s will serve as the general manager of Finland.
